Virtual Sea-Air-Space 2020

From Monday, April 13 to Friday, April 17, the Navy League of the United States and Government Matters will bring Sea-Air-Space 2020 to life virtually by gathering decision-makers from the U.S. defense industry and the sea services for five days of informative and educational sessions and important policy discussions.

Day 1: U.S. Coast Guard

Day 2: U.S. Maritime Administration

Day 3: U.S. Navy

Day 4: Modern Warfighter

Day 5: Cyber

1917 Film Screening

American Legion Post 754 has graciously invited New York Council members and their guests to attend a screening of the film 1917 on Wednesday, January 8 at 6:00 P.M. at the AMC Empire Theater (234 West 42nd bet 7th & 8th Ave). The film is based on a story told to the writer, Sam Mendes, by his grandfather, Alfred Mendes, who served in World War I. The film opened in the U.S. on Christmas for a limited release and will open to general release on January 10. There is no cost for the showing; seats are first come, first served and are open to any veteran or veteran supporter. You can register online here.

Once registered for the show, your tickets will be available at check in with a Post representative at the theater. The movie runs 114 minutes and after the show everyone is invited to Bar Dough (350 W 46th) for a cash bar. Bar Dough is owned and operated by Marine veteran and actor Joe Lisi, and offers gourmet pizza and a full service bar with a 10% discount for military and first responders.

Receive training and materials on the Navy League’s legislative priorities, then present them to members of Congress. Coffee & Conversation with Rear Admiral Charles Rock

The Greater New York Chamber of Commerce and Wings for Warriors are sponsoring a breakfast with Rear Admiral Charles Rock, Commander, Navy Region Mid Atlantic, at The Coffee House.

Rear Admiral Rock is a native of Upstate New York and assumed command of the Navy’s Mid-Atlantic Region on July 20, 2018. He was commissioned through the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps Program at Texas A&M University and holds a master’s degree in national security strategy from the National War College. His assignments at sea were aboard the USS Mahlon S.Tisdale, USS Abraham Lincoln, USS Cole, USS Leyte, USS Donald Cook and High Speed Vessel Swift. Ashore, he has served with U.S. European Command, U.S. Joint Forces Command and the Supreme Allied Commander, the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Navy Installations Command, Fleet Activities Sasebo and as Commandant, Naval District Washington.

USCG Cutter Naming Ceremony

The Commandant of the Coast Guard, Admiral Karl Schultz, with NYPD Commissioner James O'Neill and FDNY Chief of Department John Sudnik, will conduct a ceremony in Battery Park to announce the historic naming of new Coast Guard Fast Response Cutters after NYPD and FDNY 9/11 heroes who also served as USCG Reservists.

Fast Response Cutter 62 will be named after Port Security Specialist Second Class Vincent Danz, who was an NYPD officer assigned to the Emergency Service Unit Truck 3. Fast Response Cutter 63 will be named after Machinery Technician First Class Jeffrey Palazzo, who was an FDNY firefighter assigned to Rescue Five. Both served honorably as Coast Guard Reservists at Sector New York and both died in the line of duty while responding to the World Trade Center on 9/11. Their families will attend the ceremony and the public is welcome to attend to honor these heroes.

United States Marine Corps Birthday

What does the celebration of the USMC’s birthday mean to Marines across the globe? To Gen. John A. Lejeune, obviously, it meant a great deal. On Nov. 1, 1921, he issued Marine Corps Order No. 47, Series 1921, which provided a summary of the history, mission and traditions of the Corps. The illustrious Lejeune directed that the order be read to every command each subsequent year on Nov. 10 in honor of the founding of the Marine Corps.

Commodore John Barry Book Award Committee Meeting

The next Commodore John Barry Book Award Committee meeting is planned for 5:30 pm, Mon., 21 October, at 125 W. 55th St., 6 FL. A number of current books will be reviewed to select one for the 2020 Award to honor significant contribution to American maritime literature and to encourage excellence in authorship.

It is anticipated that the Book Award Reception/Dinner will be held in the Spring of 2020 at Fraunces Tavern.

Douglas Munro Memorial Ceremony

September 27, 2019 marks the 77th anniversary of the heroism Signalman 1st Class Douglas Munro displayed on Guadalcanal, evacuating Marines from unanticipated overwhelming enemy forces. For his selfless actions, he received the Medal of Honor posthumously. 

Please join U. S. Coast Guard Sector New York as we remember and honor his legacy. A small reception with refreshments will follow the ceremony in the U.S. Coast Guard Sector New York Courtyard.
