Thanks to all who joined us for the April 2022 commissioning of USCGC Clarence Sutphin Jr.
we were proud to host NYC’s first ship commissioning in more than 10 years
USCGC Clarence Sutphin Jr. is a 154-foot Sentinel Class cutter named for Bronze Star recipient and New York native BM1 Clarence Sutphin Jr. Built by Bollinger Shipyards with a command and control system from L3Harris Technologies, the Coast Guard’s newest cutter is now transiting to work for the U.S. Navy’s 5th Fleet out of Bahrain. The Sutphin is the 170th vessel Bollinger has delivered to the Coast Guard, and the 47th Fast Response Cutter.
On the eve of the commissioning, the Commissioning Committee treated the crew, their families and commissioning sponsors to a dinner cruise. First-time visitors to NYC were thrilled to see the Statue of Liberty up close and get some great photos on a clear night. Commissioning Chair Charles Blaich, also the New York Council’s VP of Fleet Support, emceed the ceremony at which plaques were awarded to the plankowners, along with other gifts for the ship from the Coast Guard Combat Veterans Association, L3Harris Technologies and Bollinger Shipyards.
VADM Steve Poulin, Commander of Coast Guard Atlantic Area, officiated at the April 21 commissioning ceremony, which was held at the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum. Attendees included families of the crew and the ship’s namesake, cadets from some of our sponsored youth programs, former Intrepid Crew Members, local sea services personnel and, of course, New York Council members. City Experiences by Hornblower was our corporate sponsor for the Distinguished Visitor Breakfast Briefing before the ceremony and many guests enjoyed tours of the new cutter afterwards, leaving with a souvenir poster courtesy of L3Harris Technologies.
The New York Council looks forward to continuing to support the crew and families of USCGC Clarence Sutphin Jr.
