WELCOME TO FLEET WEEK NYC

Fleet Week New York in its fourth decade of celebrating the sea services, with the New York Council Navy League there every step of the way. U.S. Naval vessels have been visiting New York City in a celebratory manner since the aftermath of the Spanish–American War in 1898, when Commodore Dewey was celebrated as the hero of the battle of Manila Bay. However, the first official Fleet Week took place in New York City in 1988 and is generally timed to coincide with the Memorial Day holiday weekend.

Fleet Week is an unparalleled opportunity for the citizens of New York and the surrounding areas to meet Sailors, Marines and Coast Guardsmen, as well as witness firsthand the latest capabilities of today’s maritime services. Fleet Week also marks our Council’s busiest and most visible season. Each year, we plan many events to show our active-duty visitors, the local public and the national media how the Navy League values and honors those who uphold the traditions of the maritime services.

Our marquee event is an annual welcome reception honoring Commanding and Executive Officers from the participating units. Since 2017, this event has been named in honor of Richard W. Scheuing, a long-time Navy League member and supporter of the sea services who was instrumental in bringing Fleet Week to New York. In 2021 we renamed the event to include Richard and his wife, Doris, who both remained fierce advocates for the sea services throughout their lives.
