This year marks the 39th anniversary of the Coast Guard Art Program (COGAP). Due to concerns about the COVID-19 virus, we will not have a reception as we usually do. However, the 31 works comprising the 2020 Coast Guard Art Collection will be on view at the Salmagundi Club from June 28 through August 7, 2020. Four works by Robert Semler, a recently deceased Coast Guard artist, will also be on view during the exhibition. It is with great regret that we mourn the loss of this outstanding artist who gave of his time and talent to visually tell the Coast Guard's story.
At a date to be announced, Coast Guard leadership will officially accept the 2020 collection art and will acknowledge and thank the 22 COGAP artists whose work made this year's collection possible. We look forward to posting this event online for our members to view. The remarkable COGAP artists volunteer both time and talent. This year’s works, after undergoing a rigorous jurying process, were chosen because of their artistic excellence and fidelity in representing the Service. Although there is no reception, the George Gray Award jury will convene in July to select the work that will receive this prestigious and esteemed award — the program's "best in show award" given annually. Captain Jason Tama, USCG Sector New York Commander; Elizabeth Spencer, Salmagundi Club President; and Art Connoisseur magazine editor, writer, art critic and curator Peter Trippi will make up this year's jury.
The exhibition of COGAP art will be open to the public Tuesdays through Fridays from 1:00 to 6:00 P.M., and on Saturdays and Sundays from 1:00 to 5:00 P.M. Visitors are advised to check with the Salmagundi Club for any restrictions on viewing or times.
