Navy League Youth Sailing Challenge Leads to Sailing Camp Scholarships

On Thursday August 3, 2017, the New York Council of the Navy League partnered with the Manhattan Yacht Club to host the Navy League Youth Sailing Challenge. This friendly regatta provided a valuable opportunity for participants in Council-sponsored youth programs to experience something new. More than 15 Sea Cadets, NJROTC Cadets and Young Marines spent the afternoon sailing on New York Harbor with the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island and the stunning backdrop of Lower Manhattan in the background.

Manhattan Yacht Club provided J-24 sailboats from their fleet plus volunteer skippers and mates, supplemented by Council members with sailing experience. These crews exposed the cadets to the wonders of being on the water and mentored them on the challenges of sailing.

In addition to providing a thoroughly enjoyable time on the water, Yacht Club staff opened their clubhouse to all involved, where they relaxed at the clubhouse, played lawn games and enjoyed a post-regatta cookout on the lawn.

The end of the day’s festivities did not signal the end of the cadets’ sailing education, however. As the day wrapped up, the Council presented certificates and $500 sailing camp scholarships to seven of the more accomplished cadet sailors, as voted by their crews. These cadets will return to Manhattan Yacht Club for a week of fun and sailing, further honing their skills on the water on J-24 sailboats.

Levent Sadikoglu, a joint New York Council and Manhattan Yacht Club member, generously funded two of the scholarships through corporate contributions from SK Capital Advisers and OYE Swimwear. As an added bonus, Manhattan Yacht Club covered a portion of the sailing camp tuition so that the scholarships would cover transportation and lunch for the cadets during camp.

The New York Council and Manhattan Yacht Club have worked together on numerous events in support of the Fleet and youth in the area, including an annual Fleet Week NYC regatta. The two organizations are proud of the work they have done together in exposing United States Navy Fleet Week visitors, sailors from foreign navies and New York metro area youth to the wonders of the Upper Bay. As partners, they are committed to working together to extend their programming and continue serving the needs of the community.
