Distinguished Public Service Award

New York Council, Navy League receives the United States Coast Guard Distinguished Public Service Award.

By: RADM Bob Lunney, NYNM (Ret.)

On July 5 the New York Council hosted the elegant reception for the annual Coast Guard Art Program (COGAP) for an overflow crowd at the historic Salmagundi Club in New York City. This was the 35th anniversary of this unique program, which makes use of fine art to display the Coast Guard's multifaceted roles as a military, humanitarian and law enforcement service. The 2016 collection is comprised of 26 works and portrays a wide range of Coast Guard missions, including search, rescue and drug interdiction actions. Art from this fine program is exhibited in museums around the country and is also displayed in Congressional offices and in many government and military locations.

The presentation of the art to the Coast Guard was gratefully accepted by Admiral Charles D. Michel, Vice Commandant of the Coast Guard. However the highlight of this great occasion was the presentation of the Coast Guard's Distinguished Public Service Award to the New York Council by Admiral Michel. It was warmly received by Ted Mason, President of the Council and Bob Lunney, Vice President of the Council. This is the highest public recognition that the Coast Guard may award and highlighted the New York Council's, "notable services that have contributed to the advancement of the missions and goals of the Coast Guard." The citation for this most prestigious award emphasized the hosting of multiple events by the New York Council that enhance the Coast Guard's outreach efforts and honors Coast Guard members. The New York Council's dedication and abiding commitment to the Coast Guard were most highly commended and in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Coast Guard.
