Talk & Discussion by
Lt. Col David R. Berke

In February 2014, the New York Council of the Navy League launched a new program, the National Security Breakfast Series - Tomorrow’s Challenges. Noted Naval Historian RADM Joseph Callo, USN (Ret) authored the program. The program continues today with the goal of encouraging a more forward-looking perspective on national defense, and is in line with the public education mission of the Navy League.

The audience typically brings together senior and mid-range professionals, many with either a military background or a strong interest in national security matters. Reserve component officers consistently attend, as do members of the media. The series is open to the public.

The sessions are held in the morning and attendees enjoy a continental breakfast before the session begins. Each talk is followed by a question and answer session. Discussions are often so engaging that speakers and audience members linger to continue the conversation.

Previous topics included: The Zumwalt-class destroyer, Joint Strike Fighters (F-35), the LCS Program, the Virginia-class submarine, the future of NATO, Cyber Warfare, the Importance of Joint Operations in the Future, Future Geostrategic Challenges beyond the Middle East, Directed Energy/Electric Weapons (Rail Gun/Laser) Systems, The True Cost of the Aircraft Carrier Gap, the Artic as a Major Strategic Arena, Naval Warfighting in the 21st Century, Global Undersea Warfare, the Rise and Fall of Naval Aviation, A Design for Maintaining Maritime Superiority, Carrier Strike and Maritime Power Projection in the "New Era"
